With the “doleful song” which Taylor describes, we see the beginning of the African transformation in the Americas. The old structure of African music is used to pattern the new experience of exile. The sea-changed song is a song of exile. Here began the spirituals, here began jazz. Here began the world-wide beat and sound and pressure of the humiliated, degraded, disrupted, abandoned man. Here began his auto-salvation, the means by which he patterns, in “the worst possible biological conditions,” his new and alien rite de passage.
